This calculator always tips the pre-tax bill. Tax is a separate percent of that same bill, and the tip is not applied to the tax. Tip Only ignores the tax field. If your bill amount already includes tax and you want to tip that total, leave the tax rate empty.

Split Bill divides bill + tip + tax by the number of people. Everyone gets the same share. It does not split unequal orders. For separate checks, run the calculator once per person with that person’s pre-tax amount. A blank people count counts as 1.

Delivery: often 10-15% or a few dollars minimum, more for large orders or bad weather. Taxis and rideshare: 15-20% or round up. Hotel housekeeping: often $2-5 per night. These are conventions, not rules; adjust up or down for service quality and local expectations.

For poor service, some people tip 10-15% or less; others still tip 15% and address the issue with the server or manager. Reducing the tip alone may not clarify what went wrong. If you can, speaking calmly with a manager can help the restaurant improve and may lead to an adjustment (e.g., comped item). How you handle it is a personal choice; the calculator still helps you work out the amount you decide to leave.

For takeout where you pick up the order yourself, a small tip (e.g., 10%) or leaving change is often appreciated but not always expected. For delivery, 10-15% of the order or $2-5 minimum (whichever is higher) is common; some tip more for long distances, bad weather, or quick service. If a delivery fee is charged, check whether it goes to the driver; if not, a tip is especially important.
