Gravel Calculator
Turn a length, width, and depth into cubic yards and tons. Gravel, sand, and topsoil are editable densities.
Smart Tips
• Cubic yards are length × width × depth, in feet, divided by 27.
• Tons are cubic yards times the density in the field.
• Gravel, dry, starts at 105 lb/ft³, or 1.4175 ton per cubic yard.
• Sand, dry, is 97 lb/ft³, or 1.3095 ton per cubic yard.
• The topsoil preset uses loose dry dirt at 76 lb/ft³, or 1.026 ton per cubic yard.
• A depth of 0 is 0 tons. Mulch bags are a different page.
The Formula
A 10 ft × 10 ft area at 3 inches is 25 cubic feet. At 105 lb/ft³ that is 1.3125 tons. The density field shows the same materials as tons per cubic yard so you can type over them.
Key Insights
Yards and tons
You get both. The density converts one into the other.
Three presets
Gravel, sand, and topsoil share this page. They are not separate URLs.
Editable
A scale ticket beats the preset. Type the tons per cubic yard you were given.
Dry bulk figures
The defaults are loose dry densities. Wet material weighs more.
