Smart Tips

• Cubic yards are the bed volume. Bags are cubic feet divided by the bag size.

• The bag field starts at 2 cubic feet.

• One cubic yard is 13.5 bags at 2 cubic feet each, because 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5.

• A 10 by 10 foot bed at 3 inches is 12.5 of those bags.

• This page does not convert mulch to tons. Gravel does tons.

The Formula

bags = cubic feet ÷ bag cubic feet; cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27

cu ftLength × width × depth, in feet.
27Cubic feet in one cubic yard.
2Default cubic feet in one bag.
bagsCan be fractional. Round up if you buy whole bags.

The 2 cubic foot default is the label volume, not a weight. A different bag size belongs in the field.
